OPINION POST! If you think back to the launch of the A7 (and before the A7, the NEX series), these were relatively affordable camera bodies that got people into the Sony E-Mount system. Photographers were switching to Sony E-Mount in droves.  That changed in recent years -- with new bodies like the a6500 and "G Master" lenses, Sony now targets the upscale enthusiast. As prices have gone up, Sony sales have gone down...WAY down.
Sony sales plummeted last year -- down 2 million units. Sony has used price increases to extract more revenue out of its base -- but the price increases have accelerated the decline in sales. As Sony jacks up the launch price of each new camera body, it drives away enthusiast upgraders and also 'switchers' who might switch into the Sony E-mount system.
