Besides their abundance and ease of use, the advantage of the
fossil fuels—oil, gas, and coal—is that they are energy storage
technologies. If the goal is to replace the availability and ease
of use of fossil fuels, then we need to replace their remarkable energy
storage capabilities as well. Many energy storage technologies—such as compressed air, flywheels, thermal storage, and batteries—are getting cheaper, and it will be interesting to see what ends up dominating the market. renewable sources will be the dominant form of energy in the not-too-distant future, but for this to happen, there has to be a coevolution of high-performance, high-volume storage technologies.
