Concordia's Troitsky Bridge Building Competition, hosted by the Department of Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering, celebrated its 30th anniversary this year.
Twenty-seven teams of engineers from across Canada, and one from Vermont, joined two Concordia teams on February 28 during Engineering Week to build bridges using only wooden toothpicks, popsicle sticks, white glue and dental floss. While the teams were judged on the aesthetics and originality of their designs, the ultimate test came when their bridges were subjected to the pulverizing force of the legendary "Crusher." The winning team this year was Les Pontdérables from the Cégep de Chicoutimi.
First held in 1984, the contest is named after Michael S. Troitsky, a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering who encouraged his students to build model bridges in the 1960s.
