In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Kiribati.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Kiribati is the only nation in all 4 hemispheres of the world (North, South, East and West). While the country’s land area is a mere 811 km2 (33 islands) it has an Exclusive Economic Zone of 3,441,810 km2 making it 4,243X larger! Thus, while the country is only the 187th largest in the world, its EEZ is slightly larger than all of India!
2. Kiribati has a (less famous) Christmas Island. On a map, you’ll find it marked as Kiritimati, but this is only a respelling of the word Christmas. In the Kiribati language, the combination ti is pronounced s. The island is home to only 4 villages, 3 of which are called London, Banana and Poland, and comprises over 70% of Kiribati’s total land area.
3. Most of the islands and atolls are only 1-2 metres above sea level, with the highest point just 81 m above sea level. Two small uninhabited islets, Tebua Tarawa and Abanuea, already disappeared below the sea in 1999. To counter the very real risk of the entire country disappearing beneath the waves within the next 50 years, Kiribati bought 20 km2 of land from Fiji where they can start relocating people.
4. There are no land animals that are native to Kiribati, although early settlers brought dogs and pigs with them. The waters surrounding Kiribati, however, are teaming with fish, seahorses, crabs, jellyfish, sharks, wales and dolphins, plus many more.
5. Kiribati is not the most known country in the world, but you might have heard of the Gilbert Islands. It used to be a British colony until 1979. The name is the local enunciation of Gilberts.
6. There is no rail, river, or lake transport, although canoes travel freely on the lagoons. However, all the major islands have airstrips.
7. South Tarawa is the capital and hub of the Republic of Kiribati and home to approximately half of Kiribati's total population. The island is extremely vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters. Already the effects of rising sea-levels and associated soil salinization are starting to threaten limited fresh water supplies. Households on South Tarawa do not have the option to retreat from coastal erosion, as the atoll is narrow and already crowded.
