1. The country was named Moçambique by the Portuguese after the Island of Mozambique, derived from Musa Al Big, an Arab trader who first visited the island and later lived there. The island was a major Arab port and boat building center in the years before Vasco da Gama visited in 1498. The name of the island is derived from Ali Musa Mbiki (Musa Al Big), sultan of the island in the times of Vasco da Gama. This name was subsequently taken to the mainland country which is modern-day Mozambique.
2. The Bazaruto Archipelago is the largest marine reserve in the Indian Ocean and comprises of six beautiful islands. The largest island in the archipelago, Bazaruto Island is about 37 km long and 7 km wide, surrounded by magnificent stretches of white sand. Enormous sand dunes comprise the eastern strip, while the interior contains large freshwater lakes frequented by a wide variety of water birds such as flamingos, and is inhabited by crocodiles.
3. Mozambique is home to the Mvumba Rock Paintings, rare rock paintings, which are thought to be around 8,000 years old.
4. Maputo is the capital of Mozambique and was formerly known as Lourenco Marques. It is also called the 'City of Acacias'.
5. The national flag of every country displays something that symbolizes something important for the country. Mozambique is no exception. Mozambique is the only country displaying a modern weapon on its national flag. It is a Kalashnikov AK47.
6. According to the 2014 revision of the World Population Prospects the total population was 24 692 000 in 2010, compared to only 6 442 000 in 1950. The proportion of children below the age of 15 in 2010 was 44.1%. Only 3.3% of Mozambicans are over 65.
7. Modes of transport in Mozambique include rail, road, water, and air. There are railways connecting the principal cities, 30400 km of highways (19% of which are paved), navigable waterways, seaports and 158 airports! But out of these, only 22 are paved.
