Hiroshi Yamauchi was, by all accounts, a rather harsh and unforgiving leader. But despite his fearsome reputation, he is responsible for creating one of the world's largest family-friendly media empires by transforming Nintendo from a small card company into a video game giant — salvaging the entire video game industry in North America in the process. Many viewed Yamauchi as nothing but a mere businessman; yet, he was willing to make some rather unorthodox decisions, betting the company first on a janitor and line worker in Gunpei Yokoi; then again in a shiftless daydreamer in Shigeru Miyamoto. Yamauchi may have been a daunting figure to those in the industry that had dealt with him, but he has left an indelible mark on worldwide culture, as well as many a gamer's childhood.
