REVIEW: The second in a series of Canadian national election games. Here we have the more recent 2008 election, playing as the New Democratic Party (NDP), the third party at the time, under Jack Layton's leadership. After a few practice games, I did fairly well but this recorded final copy is off the charts and a great play!
This was Theoryspark's offical 2008 mod from the time. You have the incumbent Conservative Party Government led by Stephan Harper, they consolidated their lead with the Liberal Party losing 18 seats. The NDP gained only 7 seats.
The strategy I used for this game, was to target the Conservative leaning regions where we had a chance of taking a lead, Our good areas are Vancouver and British Columbia, which is a must to win if you want to win the election. Other key targets were North and South Ontario the most populous areas really, and getting little wins in new Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and the Northern Territory states, all which could make the difference. Of the hard blue mid-west states, the softest one is Manitoba, which is a must win, to win this election as well. Quebec was mostly off the record, but Montreal became an prospect for the NDP. The Greater Toronto regions were widely advertised in as well.
At the beginning of the campaign the main target was winning the endorsers with the biggest momentum rewards, and stealing a couple from other parties.
So the first half was targeting seats in mostly British Columbia and holding onto Vancouver as we didn;t get off to a great start.
Advertising was spread between Harper and Dion, more so Harper to win the important states. More efficent TV Ads were used to begin and with and continuing for Jack Layton. Newspaper Ads became increasingly used and helped alot. The 1 day production length meant any attack ads backfiring could easily be replaced. All in all, a really good election game, watch to see how I did!
