Intro
Hi Start up Chile I'm Juan and this is Diana and we are the founders of Apiio we are from Bogotá Colombia and we are on a mission to solve the problem of food waste. We are both Industrial engineers and Juan is also a designer our experience in different multinational companies showed us the huge amount of waste of all mass consumption products. As technology lovers we believe we could start solving this problem by building a mobile app that is how apiio was born.
Problem
Everyone knows that wasting food is negligent when there are many people going
hungry. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, 1.3 billions tons of food ends in the trash, what adds up to $180 billion dollars worth of food.
Why does this happen?
Food is wasted throughout all the supply chain, from initial agricultural production down
to final household consumption.
We think the actions we take as individuals can build upon one another to make a
collective difference.
Most householders are not organized when it comes to grocery management, for them,
tracking their food is not an easy task, also people often buy more than what they need
and some of them are not aware of the global food waste issue.
In Chile according to a study by the University of Talca, 95% of Chileans are accustomed to throw food from the refrigerator, and 17% don't even questioned about this practice.
The main reason why they do this is because they have forgotten that the food was in
the refrigerator, something that happens 60% of the time.
App features
We start searching for different applications that could help reduce the food waste, we
couldn't find an optimal and practical solution, but we found out that the connection
between the householders and supermarkets was the key factor that was missing and
if this issue is not automatically people are never going to create an non food waste
habit.
We realized Apiio is an app where people do their purchases they have automatically what they have bought in their smartphones in an organized way, just by using the ID number in which the client is registered in the supermarket.
It's makes easy and intuitive the grocery management in the house, allowing the user to share the purchased and keep track of each product, encouraging the planning of future purchases.
The cool thing is that you will be notify when a product is about to expire, so you can
enjoy it before it gets bad.
Also the client will be notify about the offers of the products that they have in their
grocery list so they can benefit of the appropriate offers depending on the specific
needs, making the most of these deals.
We have talk to the biggest supermarket in Colombia and they are interested to hear
more about apiio,in the next week will have our next reunion with the regional
marketing chief, they found apiio a new fresh idea
that goes with their technology
strategy
We have been working by the hand of an expert mobile agency, and we have finally
reached the wireframe of Apiio, bearing in mind all the features the app needs, we got
the 2-quotation proposition for the MPV and we are now in the negotiation process

We feel it's important to maintain the recent attention this issue's been receiving, and to
continue raising awareness,
The relationship between Chile and Colombia in this sector is a strong relationship, and we know this will have a huge social impact.
We think the world needs an app like this, and we are committed to make Apiio a reality.
