Apple Pie Bars - Polish version of apple pie which is called Szarlotka (pronounced shar-LOT-ka)
This Szarlotka recipe combines a layer of apples with a dense, cake-like crust and a crumble topping, to create a Polish apple pie that is sure to be a fall favorite. It's so tasty with cup of coffee or tea. Truly delicious and really worth to make something new! This will be your family favorite fall dessert.
INGREDIENTS:
-3.5 cup all purpose flour
-3/4 cup granulated white sugar
-1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or 15g vanilla sugar)
-2 teaspoon baking powder
-2 eggs
-11.28 ozs butter (320g)
-4.40lbs apples of your choice
-1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
-1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
**have extra sugar for the apples**
DIRECTIONS:
1)Peel, core and slice apples into quarters.
2)Shred apples.
3)In a pot on a medium heat, cook apples until soft (about 15 minutes) add extra sugar if apples are sour and add cinnamon with nutmeg.
4)Combine apples with the spices and cook until soft.
5)To flour, add baking powder, sugar, eggs and butter.
6)Blend together with pastry cutter all the ingredients.
7)Divide dough into half. Place first half of the dough onto the baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Place the second half of the dough to the refrigerator.
8)Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C)
9)Poke the dough with a fork.
10)Bake the dough for about 15-20 minutes (or until slightly golden brown color)
11)Take out the dough from the oven.
12)Spread evenly cooked apples onto the crust.
13)Grate the second half of the dough onto the apples.
14)Bake for 40-50 minutes.
15)Let the apple cake cool down.
16)Dust with powdered sugar and enjoy!
