It has to be two intense days Hackathon, where students have been working around the clock. But what's so out of it?
There were many creative solutions to various problems in Lyngby-Taarbæk municipality. A large part of the groups had chosen to take advantage of GEO data to a greater or lesser extent, and it meant that route optimization included in many of the proposed solutions.
The main themes which were presented by the groups:
- Energy Utilization in Lyngby-Taarbæk municipality buildings (an extended form of environmental labeling)
- Optimization of bus routes to reduce CO2
- Reactive System for regulating traffic lights designed to promote 'green waves' and reduction of CO2
- Smart Energy Renovation of Lyngby-Taarbæk municipality buildings, focusing on the placement of solar cells and isolation
- General Demonstration in the use of big data
- Elderly Care - With customized citizen needs and route optimization for the individual home.
- Comparisation: Of population groups in various areas, for example, be used for marketing or private.
- Differentiated Instruction in primary schools utilizing big data
- Flexible waste collection in the municipality, with predictive element and route planning.
And the winner was?
Danish Bank had donated prizes to the Hackathon and Climate-KIC donating a special Climate price. The winners - and judge panel's reasons - were as follows:
1st place: Smart Energy renovation
The group thought the project through: From concept, the solution to market potential. The solution is visionary, scalable and group shows a large surplus. It is manage to put many Big Data variables in the game and also demonstrate a visual expression through a convincing DEMO.
2nd place: Care +
The group has presented a creative and inspiring idea where the technology used to put people in the center of the elderly population. The group has a simple way demonstrated how a complex problem can be put in a simple form and create value for the elderly population.
3rd place: BusMore
The group began with a good visionary history presented with a convincing DEMO. The project is ambitious posted. They have used a wide range of data sources to convincingly to control traffic planning. The project can undoubtedly help to power a "Smart City".
Climate Prize: The city's Best Buildings
The group has presented a project that makes municipalities able - in a simple way - to prioritize energy renovation. The solution is easily accessible. And the data used are easily put into a relevant framework. Group illustrates some problem areas that are current and the solution has a good potential to expand.
What was the students' experience?
We talked with the group called Benchmark which became no. 2 in competition. This was a large group of in total 9 students respectively from CBS, DTU and the University. None of them knew each other beforehand, but got together at introduction meetings to the Hackathon. Meetings were facilitated by IBM and was intended both to inform and inspire young people to participate but also to give them specific insight into IBM Bluemix TM platform.
Before the Hackathon the group had brainstormed and communicated via Facebook, and had arrived at four possible topics to work with. The final issue was settled by a vote. Members of the group were the only ones from DTU as having definite Big Data experience.
The group agreed that it was a great force that there were participants from different universities. It gave perspectives in the project, which made it more feasible. They were generally very satisfied with Hackathon, but would have liked one more day to work with the item in. Several of the group members would like to continue working on the project.
From IBM's part, it has been a great pleasure to see many months of preparation being released and not least, discover how much the young people that we all rely on in the future, can bring. We hope Lyngby-Taarbæk municipality will benefit from the inspiration and exploits the creativity of young people, and we are looking forward to be part of the next Hackathon!
Must say: congratulations to the winners and a big thanks to the participants and for everyone's involved and supporting this event.
