Breaking Down the Stick Episode 2: Qanba Carbon
I dive deep into the Qanba Carbon and reveal the inner-workings, point out some mod points, and offer my opinions on what you can and should do to upgrade this fight stick. If you are curious about the latency or the more commonly, and improperly used term "lag", I didn't test that. There are a variety of reasons, but the most important is there isn't a widely accepted method of doing it consistently and accurately. There are a couple efforts that will provide empirical data regarding response time of the system and I am following them closely for future episodes and tests.
Without further ado, here are my basic findings and grades:
Basic Modding: A
You can easily change the lever, buttons, and balltop with basic tools. You need a phillips and flat head screw driver and everything after that is easy.
Basic modding is considered: Lever swap, Button Swap
Advanced Modding: C
The single PCB that is at the top of the case but Qanba added some Test Points to make soldering to important signal lines easy and more accessible. The creative modder can pad hack or add a UFB with a moderate amount of hassle to this stick.
Advanced Modding is considered: Adding pad-hacks, various fighting board upgrades, or LEDs.
Panel swaps: Possible but unlikely. There is plastic in the way of the panel which makes alternate layouts besides Vewlix challenging.
Be sure to subscribe and watch future episodes of BTDS. As usual, it only gets better from here! This episode used a new Lumix GH4 in 4K down sampled to 1080P. My new Zoom H6 mic decided to not let me have access to all of the audio so I ended up recording the voice over with my AKG P220 and Scarlett 2i2 in my office... which is a bit echoey.
