- We all know China has land border dispute with India and Sea boundary disputes in South China Sea with other neighboring countries.
- There is another major Chinese Neighbor Mongolia and as you can guess, China has tension with Mongolia as well.
- Mongolia is a land locked country sandwiched in between, China in South and, Russia in North.
- Mongolia has always been suspicious of its southern neighbor that Beijing would one day reclaim Mongolian territory as well.
- Over the last two decades, China has leveraged economic tools like investing in the Mongolian mining sector and infrastructure development. only to reassert its power and influence over Mongolia.
- As a matter of fact, Mongolia has been over dependent on China and 80 percentage of Mongolian exports are purchased by China.
- Due to slow growth in China, Mongolian economy is also struggling. Therefore Mongolian people want to reduce the over dependence on China.
- India and Mongolia have co-operated in security arena in the past. Its important to note In 2009 A civil nuclear deal was concluded in between India and Mongolia, which has massive Uranium reserves.
Proactively sensing the opportunity and to bring life again in the bilateral relationship, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Mongolia in 2015, and extended monitory help in the form of $1 Billion line of credit loan. But China considered Indian help of its weak friend as bribe to Mongolia.
- Now we will talk about how China bully its small neighbors. In late 2016 Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama visited Buddhist Majority country Mongolia.
- As expected China got angry on this visit and closed important border roads blocking the trade with Mongolia after Dalai Lama's visit. Over dependent Mongolia succumbed to the Chinese pressure and promised to China that it would never invite Dalai Lama again.
- Due to this incident, China lost the good will of Buddhist Majority country Mongolia.
- Recently Khaltmaa Battulga fought and won presidential election on anti china platform.
- While being wary of China, Battulga wants better relationship with Russia and India.
- Amid Doklam stand off, Making smart move, Narendra Modi invited Battulga for an Indian visit.
- This visit will help in strengthening bilateral ties in between India and Mongolia.
- As part of Act East policy of Narendra Modi, India can provide counter balance to Mongolia against China.
- Though Indian friendship with Mongolia is not against any third country. but its certainly a signal to China that India can also play the geopolitical game in the china's backyard as well.
- There were days when China used to implement string of pearls strategy, and India used to watch it helplessly. Now India is proactively playing its cards well and it has forced china to become just a reactionary force.
