The Guads! Remote, legendary, hazardous, fabulous! A convoluted four hour drive from El Paso, The Guads are worth chancing unreliable forecasts and the ever present possibility of either sinking out into the inaccessible valley below, or high winds and deadly rotor while top landing. The mostly west-facing ridge runs almost 100 miles, and determined pilots have soared almost the entire length in good conditions.
Our human noticed that three models all agreed that conditions Friday morning would be good for PG. After dozens of calls and pleading with every pilot and non-political he knows, he resigned himself to flying solo with no ground support. It was totally worth it!
The stars at night are unbelievable. This is one of the four darkest sites in the USA, and that combined with the 6K MSL and dry air make for the best seeing in the continental USA. Free camping in the Lincoln National Forest. Much of the area is in the Talon MOA, so be sure to contact the controlling authority, check for NOTAMs, and ask if it is "hot"
