DAYTON-- If you've ever tried finding a place to live through sites like Craigslist, you probably know a scammer could be behind any one of the listings.
A Dayton family we talked with says they lost hundreds of dollars because of crooks.
Amanda Masten and her family were looking to relocate to Michigan from Dayton. They searched Craigslist until they found a home they thought would work. They then headed north to check it out. Everything seemed ok when they looked at the rental property.
"When I got down there and I looked at it everything, everything seemed fairly good. The lights were on, the heat was working, it was warm in the house," said Masten.
It was when they were signing the lease that Amanda noticed something suspicious. The man they had been working with signed a different name on the document.
It turns out the people showing her the place didn't even own it. It had been foreclosed on by the bank.
Amanda says she thinks the crooks just broke into the home, changed the locks and then started showing it as their own.
The Mastens were able to get back a few hundred dollars out of the thousand they put down but this has been devastating.
"We've pretty much been living off the help of my family and my husband's mother and that's just about it," said Masten.
