DETROIT - Everybody likes a good “comeback story” and Detroit has one of the best. Be amazed at the former greatness of the Detroit, be shocked at the decline of Detroit and be in awe at the recovery in process. No major city in the USA has gone through the economic and demographic upheaval like the city of Detroit. As is well known, Detroit rose to be a great city then fell to a city in crisis with the rise and fall of the automobile industry within the boundaries of the city of Detroit. From being the epi-center of the automobile industry Detroit moved to a secondary position which created huge job losses, economic decline and depopulation. But in recent times that decline has stopped and has been replaced by a new optimism because of improving economic conditions fuelled by public and corporate investments spurring a new revitalization of core of the city, especially the Woodward Ave corridor and the Waterfront. That resulted in a optimism reflected in the change of the city’s slogan from – “Detroit: The Motor City” to “Detroit: America’s Great Comeback City”. Icing on the cake came recently when Lonely Planet, the world’s leading travel guide, named Detroit as the no. 2 “city destination” in the world for 2018. All that makes for a gripping story. Join me every Friday as I publish a new vlog to unravel the story of this fascinating city.
