Incredible K9 Tip: Ditch the flexi leash! If you want a long leash, buy a long line.
Flexible, retractable, extendable leashes do more harm than good for your dog's state of mind. Why? Because the leash is always tight, you are successfully teaching your dog that if they pull on their collar, they can go anywhere they want. You are teaching your dog that they can physically drag you toward a tree, bush, human, dog, cat, squirrel, car, etc, as well as mentally disregard your presence and leadership. They are also way too long. When they are fully extended...15'...20'...25'... and your dog is still pulling ahead, you cannot shorten the leash very easily, so you have zero control. Have you ever Googled "flexi leash injuries"? Injuries could occur to both you or your dog. All you need is a 6' leash, but if you want a longer leash, buy a long line. A structured walk is more beneficial, both physically and mentally for your dog, than a drag-me-down-the-street and run-around-like-a-wild-child-style walk :) While training a dog to walk politely on-leash, I require them to walk politely on my left-hand side, on a short (but not tight) leash, with their head parallel to my leg. After a few minutes of walking, I say "go potty", allowing them to move away from me, sniff, and potty. After a few moments there, I'll say "heel" again, and resume the structured walk until the next "pit stop". My structured walk is about 80%-90% "heel" and 10%-20% "break" time.
