During a snorkeling trip in the famous turtle bay Marsa Mubarak, about 40 km north of Marsa Alam, we came across this gentile giant, the Dugong (Dugong dugon), while feeding on the sea grass fields. After a while, this young male left the sandy bottom and raced towards a giant Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and started to attack the animal; hammering its tusks onto the turtle's shield. This behavior is typical territorial; both species feed on the sea grass in this area, but I've never seen this behavior before and especially not that rough! You can hear the Dugong making these loud, high pitched noises. These were only produced when he spotted a turtle feeding on the sea grass. A very exciting moment and luckily I had my camera with me!
