Scientist by day, music producer by night – Belfast-born, London-based artist Max Cooper has been examining the details of patterns for years, criss-crossing back and forth between these seemingly divergent disciplines. Starting out as a molecular biologist before earning his PhD in computational biology, Cooper was committed to being a scientist. What he discovered, though, was that his yearning to devote himself to music was just as strong as his scientific talents – and, in fact, that they could influence one another. Growing up listening to drum & bass, jungle, electronica and trip-hop, his early musical output is duly a varied and playful one: a personal examination of experimental sonics, composed by a naturally studious mind, finding a home on labels such as Cologne’s Traum Schallplatten and London’s Fields. On his 2014 debut album Human, he merges freeform IDM and modern classical compositions into hi-definition club music, scalped and sculpted with microscopic precision, and on 2016’s Emergence he takes inspiration from the biological concept of emergence: how complex things like humans emerge from seemingly simple natural laws, considering perfection and imperfection, numbers and shapes, to ground his studied take on electronic sounds
