On Wednesday, Facebook said that it had discovered evidence of ad spending related to fake accounts "likely operated out of Russia" during the 2016 US presidential election. Alex Stamos, Facebook's chief security officer, said that in response to growing concern over "Russian interference in the electoral process," the company conducted an examination of ads purchased over the past two years. The social networking site discovered nearly 100,000 dollars in ad buys between 2015 and may 2017 "associated with roughly 3,000 ads" and connected to nearly 500 fake accounts. Stamos wrote in a post on Facebook's official blog, "Our analysis suggests these accounts and Pages were affiliated with one another and likely operated out of Russia."
