Justin Marx: We just started selling a new line of microgreens from an urban farm here in Seattle called Farmbox Greens. This company really checks all the boxes for me, because not only is the product really delicious and high quality, but it's also extremely sustainable.
So...what does an urban farm look like? Let me show you. This is Farmbox Greens' urban farm, which literally is the epitome of local and potentially the face of the future of farming. Let me introduce you to Dan, the owner of Farmbox.
Dan Albert: My name is Dan Albert, I'm an urban farmer here in Seattle Washington. I own Farmbox Greens and we specialize in growing microgreens.
We're super local in that we grow our greens and deliver them to you within hours. That means longer shelf life. They're fresh, they're more flavorful.
We're able to do this because we're in a controlled environment system. That means we're able to provide the perfect nutrition for the plants. We provide the right lighting. We're pesticide & herbicide free.
We're also working on becoming the most sustainable farm that we can be by minimizing our carbon footprint, reusing and recycling our nutrients, not having waste products and minimize our overall footprint on the environment as a farm.
We grow our greens hydroponically. It's a pretty simple process in terms of how we grow. We plant the seeds on the cloth. After a few days, the seeds have germinated and we expose them to light. The roots go down and into the nutrient rich water, and the leaves grow up towards the light.
Then after 5-7 days under the light, we take the flats off and we harvest everything by hand and package it up. That way we ensure quality and make sure that we minimize any roots or seeds or anything like that. Any debris that could be into the product. That way it's the cleanest product that we can harvest.
Justin Marx: Farmbox microgreens are not only the freshest produce you'll find in town, but they're also extremely sustainable and grown without herbicides or pesticides.
Dan Albert: It's a really efficient way to deliver nutrients with water, but it also allows us to run a recirculating system so we're highly water efficient. We use about 90% less water compared to conventionally grown greens.
It's also a really efficient system for stacking them up and doing a vertical system rather than something that's just flat, horizontal and takes up a lot of square footage.
