Gypsy's Couch attempt. My cat doesn't have thyroid issue but rather she was abandoned and was basically skin and bones when we found her. She had to under go a massive surgery to repair multiple (roughly 15-20) abdominal hernias not long after we found her. The vet figured she was only about 5 or 6 months old, had her tested for many many things including Giardia (which thankfully was negative). She was so malnourished we had a hard time finding the right kind of food cause everything went through her. She has an eating disorder as a result it was very difficult to get weight on her and when it did stay it created other issues. She is still bigger than what we want but isn't as big as she used to be, she is healthier and happier which makes us happier. She is continuing to lose weight, it has to be done slower so it is healthy weight lose. Taking on strays/rescues can prove to be difficult, you just don't know what kind of medical issues may have developed due to being abandoned or neglected. One shouldn't pass judgment on another without knowing all the facts.
