Posted this video to answer the simple question: does the magnetic structure developed in a ferrofluid rotate with a symmetrical permanent magnet? I used a stack of six donut magnets centered on a turntable, underneath a petri dish full of ferrofluid, supported by a clear plastic sheet so that you can see the turntable turn below. Although the magnetic field is not perfectly homogeneous, causing the ferrofluid to be jostled a bit, it is obvious that as the donut magnets are rotated, the ferrofluid structure remains substantially fixed in its position with respect to the lab frame of reference.
