Have less "Oh Shit" moments. No FPV or LOS for 3:39 min
Let's start off with what I was using and where I was flying.
TBS Discovery with a 1.3gh 200mw Tx and a Lawmate receiver.
I use IBCRAZY antennas, Clover on the quad and a cross hair on the receiver.
Problem # 1
I am using a 12v 19" TV montor ........Why is that bad?
It's not an FPV monitor. It will blink, blink go to black screen on you. At least an FPV monitor will not blue or black out on you unless you have really shitty reception.
Why do I like using a 19" TV monitor? Because I can see where I'm flying. Along with using the GoPro Hero 3 for the FPV camera the picture is awesome. Plus people behind you can see too.
Monitor and stand for less than 150 bucks makes it a great deal too.
Problem # 2
Apollo RC airfield in the Sepulveda Basin.
High noise levels and multiple sources of likely interference.
This is our local flying field that has many pilots doing a variety of RC and FPV flying. This is also located near 2 major freeways.and city noise levels. ( Busy ) not clean.
Problem # 3
The quad is one of a few that I fly. The last time it was updated, things were changed in settings and I was not sure if the switch for Fail-Safe changed locations on my radio........I know now....
Problem # 4
Distance was under a 1/4 mile, no big deal but my elevation was about 60-75ft. Maybe to low or in combination with other things.
Problem # 5
If I would have turned my quad around, I might have got signal.
I should watch the elevator stick and 1-2 ticks of up for 5-10 sec's should do the trick till I figure whats next. I went to high,
Solutions
1) Upgrade from a 200mw to a 800 or 1000mv FPV Tx
2) Use a FPV monitor along with the monitor I'm already using by splitting the signal. This will help when the large monitor can't keep a screen.
3) Test your equipment regularly. Test GPS, ATT and Manual.
4) Test Course Lock and Home Lock.
5) Test GPS / Return to home in a controlled situation rather than an emergency.
6) Calibrate before you fly a new location. GPS hates magnets.
7) Home Lock before you take off.
8) 3,4,5,6,7 have nothing to do with FPV untill FPV shits on you.
I already upgraded to an 800mw Tx and will get a 1000mw when available, Looking to get ether a FPV 7"monitor or a set of goggles to back up my 19"screen. Took my equipment out today and tested the heck out of everything. All Good.
