A short time ago, a curved-display smartphone was just a marketing exercise from Samsung, publicising what can be achieved with the new flexible omled screens. Now, that concept has evolved into the Galaxy Note Edge, and the finished product is quite something to behold.
The Note Edge isn't just a fancy screen; beneath the display this smartphone is essentially the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which was also launched at IFA this year. It has the same 1.3gHz octa-core 64-bit Exynos 5433 processor, the same 3GB RAM, the same 32GB of physical storage complemented by a microSD card slot that can boost storage by a further 64GB. Even the 16 and 3.7-megapixel front- and rear-facing cameras are identical.
It's the screen where things start to get interesting.
Let's start with the Note Edge’s main front-facing screen, which is a 5.6in thing of QHD beauty, boasting 1,600 by 2,560 pixels at 524ppi. This alone puts it up there with the best smartphone screens on offer right now. Add in the curved 1in side screen and you have a device that stretches things still further, in every way.
Because that side screen isn't just an additional inch of display for you to gaze at admiringly: rather, it's an independent screen that's seamlessly attached to the dominant display.
This means that when your phone is asleep you can operate the Note Edge with just the 1in side-screen. As you'd expect, Samsung has already designed a handy series of OS strips for your convenience. The current strips on offer are six customisable app shortcuts, a Twitter feed, weather or a pedometer.
The side screen also offers a new control input for media, meaning you can skip tracks or pause/rewind video without interfering with the main screen.
The Edge is a victim of its uniqueness, though: because it’s the only device of its kind, there has been no time for third-party developers to design additional software/features for this new screen. We hope they jump on board, because the results could be sensational... or, naturally, massively disappointing.
The device fits nicely in your hands, with the side control bar easily reachable with your right thumb. The Galaxy Note Edge only comes with a curved strip on the right hand-side, however, meaning it will be a very foreign and unnatural feeling – at first – for lefties to use. Whether Samsung will release a left-handed version of the Edge in the future is anyone’s guess.
The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge is a breath of fresh air in an Android smartphone market that has, for the past few years, measured progress and innovation in terms of pixels on a screen or the speed of a processor. The wraparound screen offers something genuinely different, and we love it.
