Accelerated technological change is increasing the pressure to redefine competitive advantages in a globalised world. Technological development is restructuring the productive process, all the way from product design to distribution, and is leading to the adoption of new business models.
It can be argued that one of the biggest forces of change is technological convergence due to digitalisation and new scientific developments. This process, in which existing technologies merge or evolve into new forms that will perform similar tasks, is disrupting the way we do business, delivering threats to some, opportunities to others and question-marks for all. Examples of converging technologies include ICT, automation and additive manufacturing, sensors, advanced materials, biotechnology, sustainable technologies, artificial intelligence and numerical modelling.
