We've been successfully integrating the GoPro 3+ Black Edition camera in our ATEM 1 M/E live switch events for two years. Coupled with the Nyrius Aries Pro wireless HDMI transmitter/receiver, we've been able to add alternate perspectives (some great, some not as well received ;-) like the back of the Richmond Aud,, an upstage behind-the-performers (toward audience) perspective, or handheld on a conga line!
We purchased a GoPro 4 Silver camera, and now a GoPro 5 camera to add to our mix, appreciating the touch display for facilitated setup at gigs, and new features on the GoPro 5. Much to our surprise, we found out on-site that the 4 didn't seem to be connectable to our ATEM (through the Aries at least).
Now back in our office, we decided to formally test all 3 cameras without the wireless unit, to see how they performed. Watch the video for the test... here's the quick summary:
The test:
- ATEM 1 M/E production switcher, 1080i
- 1 GoPro 3+ Black, Video set to 1080, 30fps
- 1 GoPro 4 Silver, Video set to 1080, 30fps
- 1 GoPro 5, Video set to 1080, 30fps
- HDMI cable plugged into an HDMI port on the ATEM, the other end plugged into each camera, one at a time, sequentially, to see if output appears on the switch's multi-view
Results:
- GoPro 3+ Black: SUCCESS
- GoPro 4 Silver: FAIL
- GoPro 5: FAIL
Conclusion: GoPro must have changed something in the HDMI implementation after the 3+ series. Although the HDMI specs. document that if the display device does not support Progressive 1080 the sending device should switch to an interlaced output, my guess is that this broke in the GoPro 4 (and subsequent) firmware.
Working with GoPro on this to see if it will be resolved.. I'll update the description if progress is made.
