For anyone who was wondering, GoPro Hero 5 Session manual (spoiler alert, the answer is that it is actually not charging but it can be used while connected to an external power supply)
"USING THE CAMERA WHILE CHARGING You can capture video and photos while the camera is plugged in to a USB charging adapter, or the GoPro Wall Charger or Auto Charger with the included USB cable. (You cannot record while charging the camera through a computer.) When you stop recording, the camera battery begins to charge. Note: Because the door is open, the camera is not waterproof during charging."
