Here's a handy list of do's and don'ts that we've come up with for granite countertop owners.
DO clean your granite countertops daily. It will require less effort in the long term and if any spills happened while you were out it will help you spot them faster.
DON'T use products containing ammonia, bleach, or any other product that is not specifically intended for use on natural stone. While these agents may not damage the stone itself, they will deteriorate the sealer more quickly. Some may also cause a film to build up on the surface, making it appear dull and and greasy.
DON'T ever put drain or toilet cleaners on the countertop. The chemicals in these products can permanently stain and discolor the stone.
DO use coasters for drinks. Especially on marble surfaces, which even when perfectly sealed, can still etch from acidic liquids.
DON'T let spills sit on your countertop for extended periods of time. The longer they are on the surface, the higher the chance for them to penetrate into the stone, leaving permanent damage.
DO blot spills instead of wiping as it won't spread the spill any farther.
DON'T worry if a stain develops. It can be removed by a simple, effective and inexpensive process.
DO use a cutting board when preparing food. Even though granite's surface is hard and unlikely to scratch, it can happen. Also, cutting directly on granite will cause your knives to dull quickly.
DON'T ignore your granite's maintenance. Natural stone countertops are very durable and made to last a lifetime but need to be taken care of periodically to retain their beautiful appearance.
And finally DO enjoy your countertops. With proper care they will provide decades of elegance and practicality.
