Wireless power transfer (WPT) technology enables convenient and automatic battery charging for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Therefore, we demonstrate 200 Watts class Drone Wireless Charging system using WPT technologies. This WPT charging step is divided into 3 stages. 1st stage refers to the drone landing on WPT charging platform. 2nd stage refers to the Drone Wireless charging. The last stage refers to the drone taking off from WPT charging platform.
First step is the drone landing on WPT charging platform. Once the drone has landed on the platform, the power is transferred to battery in drone wirelessly. Wireless charging parameter, battery voltage, input current, charging power can be monitored in real-time using 2.4 G Wi-Fi communication. And the regulator provides the function of CC-CV mode, which is an effective way to charge lithium batteries.
The Coil to coil efficiency is 91% and the overall efficiency is 72%.
DGPS is utilized instead of GPS for more accurate landing. DGPS information, such as the drone location and its attitude also can be monitored.
200 Watts-class resonant WPT charging system for drone consists of a 60kHz inverter, Tx and Rx windings, resonant topologies, a regulator and a battery. High-frequency operation and WPT system with high coupling coefficient are used to reduce the size and the mass of drone WPT system. And, we proposed and fabricated the WPT landing plate considering the coil alignment. The Tx part and the Rx parts contain the windings with ferrite to complete the magnetic path .The core structure can reduce the leakage electromagnetic field. The charging method using magnetic field has electrical safety advantages. And we, proposed Three Phase Resonant Magnetic Field charging scheme for Low EMI and EMF. Elimination of the 3rd harmonic components is possible via three-phase inverter.
The three-phase system has very small power ripples compared to those of the single-phase system. Current flowing through the three phase resonant magnetic field system to transfer 200 watts to the battery is smaller than that of the singel phase resonant magnetic system. And we also proposed High Q Multiple Resonant Reactive Loop Shielding (MRRLS) for EMI and EMF Reduction.
In the near future, our development of the drone wireless charging system on the automotive vehicle can provide a tangible solution for delivery systems, surveillance systems and unlimited possible applications
