Heraklion is the capital city of Crete. It is located in the centre of the island and it is the island's main port and airport. Its geopolitically strategic position is manifested by the Venetian fort of Koules that dominates the port and the old city. Today Heraklion is the entrance gate to thousands of tourists that visit Crete every year especially in summer.
