Steps we take to fertilize* a young fruit tree:
*We recommend organic fertilizer- we use Nutririch chicken poop pellets. Amount and rates will depend on specific soil conditions.
1. Spread fertilizer (about 32 oz. for a 3-6 ft. tree) around the drip line of the tree. It can go over the existing mulch or be buried underneath the mulch- we prefer to not disturb the existing mulch.
2. Add more mulch on top of the fertilizer around the tree (6 inches deep and 2 ft. wide around drip line). Remember, any organic matter can be used as mulch (logs, leaves, grass, twigs), just don't add too much around the trunk (1 in. around trunk is good).
The fertilizer should last 2-3 months depending on rain fall.
