Overconfident, and came into the corner too fast. Lowsided. Lesson learned. Here's what I think so far:
- I came into the corner too fast - the road speed limit was 30 mph, the turn speed limit was 15 mph, and I was going 40 mph. I've done it before, but that's playing with fire, especially in cold weather with well worn tires (stock - 6,000 miles).
- Too much throttle too quick. I was feeling pretty confident (too confident), so I wanted to rocket out of the turn by accelerating at the apex. Unfortunately, I was probably already at the traction limit given the weather/road conditions/tires. You can hear the revs increasing just before I slide out.
- I chose a poor cornering line (turned in too early). You can see evidence of that 4 seconds in (0:04) when I try to bring the bike more upright because I thought I was going into the other lane.
- It's hard to tell, but I may also have stepped on the rear brake during the turn in an attempt to correct my poor cornering line. If so, that could have reduced my traction enough to cause the slide (combined with the other factors).
- My grip on the handlebars was too tight - keeping your arms loose allows the bike to stabilize itself, but I came into the turn somewhat tense, and I didn't allow the bike to do its thing.
That's all just a guess though.
No injuries, and no serious damage to the bike. I ended up riding it home. 2014 Ninja 300 ABS SE.
