NASA is launching a mission to the deep ocean and I'll be on board! NASA SUBSEA is a mission going to an active underwater volcano off the coast of Hawaii to search for extreme forms of life that could inform us about how life could exist on Saturn's icy moon Enceladus. Enceladus, like the Lo'ihi volcano, has hydrothermal vents.
The mission is a partnership between NASA, NOAA, the Ocean Exploration Trust and a number of other academic institutions such as WHOI, etc. The ship I'll be on board for three weeks is the E/V Nautilus which has two underwater robots, also known as ROVs. The entire thing will be livestreamed beginning August 24, 2018 and you can tune in at http://nautiluslive.org . I'll be on the livestream from 11am-3pm Pacific Time each day.
My internet access will be limited while I'm on the ship, but when I'm able I'll be posting updates to http://patreon.com/arielwaldman and http://instagram.com/arielwaldman. Become one of my official Space Friends by joining my Patreon! Everyone who joins my Patreon right now at the $5+ level will receive a postcard from Antarctica!
