In a major boost to enhancing indigenous unmanned surveillance capabilities, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has proposed to the central government the purchase of 10 Tapas drones. Out of these, six Made-in-India drones will be allocated to the IAF, while the remaining four will be for the Indian Navy. The IAF will take the lead in the induction and acquisition of the Tapas drones, which fall under the medium-altitude long endurance (MALE) category and are developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Manufactured by a consortium of Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), these drones are expected to undergo upgrades and refinements to fully meet the defence forces' requirements. Currently, the Tapas drones can achieve an altitude of 28,000 feet and endurance of over 18 hours, although the goal is to reach 30,000 feet and 24 hours of endurance.
The IAF, which already operates Israeli-origin Searcher, Heron Mark-1, and Mark-2 drones, plans to use the indigenous Tapas drones to enhance surveillance on the northern and western fronts. The Indian Navy aims to deploy these drones for maritime surveillance. Deliveries are expected to begin within 24 months of contract signing.
