OMETEPE NICARAGUA BLOG POST | https://www.noregretslifestyle.com/single-post/isla-ometepe-nicaragua
Ometepe Island in Nicaragua | Isla Ometepe NIcaragua
Visiting Isla Ometepe, or Ometepe Island, in Nicaragua, was a must do just like volcano boarding in Leon Nicaragua was. My brother had recommended that I do it, purely because he went to the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, to Little Corn Island and did not visit the Island of Ometepe and, as much as he liked the Caribbean Islands of Nicaragua, he questioned his decision.
Isla Ometepe consists of two volcanoes that connect is the center to make the two volcanoes, one island, Ometepe. The trip over to Ometepe from San Jorge must take you through the little town of Rivas, which offers very little as far as a visiting point but is the hub where you come and go from Ometepe. From San Jorge, there are boats that run over to Isla Ometepe, and being that they are separate companies, you can just show up at any time and will be able to get on a boat over to Ometepe, without much of a wait at all.
The boat we chose to take us over to Ometepe, seemed to be on its last legs, but the point is, it got us there. We got off the boat in Moyogalpa, the main town of Ometepe, and decided, if we were going to be renting scooters to go around Ometepe, there was no point taking the bus to the other side of Ometepe Island to come back, to rent scooters, to explore the island. We checked into Yogi's Hostel in Moyogalpa, and they set us up with great scooters at a great price, and we ripped off to explore the volcanic island of Ometepe!

I can safely say, that exploring Ometepe has been the best day of the trip so far. What a uniquely beautiful place. Very rugged, undeveloped but beautiful in an untouched sort of way. The main road leaving Moyogalpa, is exhausting to look at, as it is all hand laid bricks, for a considerable distance. We stopped off at Ojo de Agua, on Ometepe, to go for a dip and then continued onto the end of the pavement in Balgue. At this point, we turned around to take the same route back around Ometepe to Moyogalpa. As the rain started to catch up to us, we decided to pull into a small palapa prior to Moyogalpa and have a beer and watch the rain cloud pass over.

Ometepe, has been a delight and I highly recommend anyone going to Nicaragua, to not only visit this beautiful island but to do it like we did. Ometepe is not very big, so you can explore the whole thing, or as much as the road will allow you and back, in a few hours. You can also hike the volcanoes on Ometepe but since we had done the volcano boarding in northern Nicaragua and Pacaya tour in Guatemala, we avoided doing the hike and in hindsight, could not have planned a better day.
