The Yaw!
The JJRC H5M is a slick midsized quadcopter that will surprise you with its speed and agility. I’m definitely going to need some practice with this unit, I have tried many different quadcopters and this one on the expert mode speed was wilder than a fifth ace! I was taken aback by how sensitive the controls were at that speed. For beginners it will be no problem in the first speed mode but when you really want to cut a rug and feel brave enough turn it up to expert and watch out.
The quadcopter comes packaged with extra blades, a camera and 4gh micro sd card, a camera you clip onto the bottom and plug in yourself, two different sets of legs and 1 3.7V 600mAh LiPo battery.
The controller has the same functions as most quad controllers do with the addition of a music control button. It is a neat function but sadly there are only 3 pre-programmed music clips you can play, I was hoping you could put your own music onto the micro sd card but that’s not the case.
The controller layout is as follows…
❖Top left controller button is the return home function and it works decently at best.
❖Top right is your flip button
❖Bottom left horizontal sliding push button is the music control and speed setting I push to the left selects the first music track, a second push stops it, another left push selects the second music track and so on back to the first (2 music and 1 laser/explosion sound)
❖Center sliding button is your on/off switch
❖Left center vertical sliding button is Camera and Video. Push up to take a picture, push down to activate video and down again to stop video
❖Right center vertical sliding button is the up/down trim
❖Bottom right horizontal sliding button is the left/right trim

Now to the flying portion. Basically with other quads you have a thumbstick directional push to pair the controller with the quadcopter, with this quad you simply turn the quad on and then turn on your controller and once the lights stop flashing and the controller beeps it is paired. It does have a two stage calibration, after the quad is paired to the controller pull both directional sticks to the bottom right corners and the quad will flash and stop when finished, then pull the sticks to the bottom left and it will flash and stop. Your quad is now paired and calibrated!
The throttle (left stick up/down) is nice and smooth, roll (right stick left/right) is steady and so is pitch (right stick up/down) and the yaw (left stick left/right) is pretty swift even in beginner mode. Then things get interesting when you hit expert mode because the Yaw is INSANE! This thing will literally spin like a top, it caught me off guard a few times and I grounded the copter just playing with the spinning yaw. It makes for some interesting flying needless to say.
The included camera takes decent video footage that shows some rainbowing but still works nicely if you want to capture some video.
I think on my next outing I’m going to remove the camera altogether as I am not worried about video footage, replace the larger legs with the smaller sleeker ones and then give that a try and see how it flies.
Overall I think this is a nice and solid quadcopter for the price. An extra battery would have been a nice inclusion but you can get a pack of 600mAh for pretty cheap if you really want more flying time. I wouldn’t recommend getting this quad solely for the music feature as it is 3 programmed tracks, a neat feature but not defining enough to be a selling point. The bread and butter with this quad to me is the fast speeds and insane yaw. If you’re on a budget and want a nice little flyer then this is for you!
