SUMMARY: On August 3, 2016, I offered a ride to a woman walking along a road in Rand, West Virginia--just outside the capital Charleston. She was happy to open up about her circumstances and life in this community. But it wasn't pretty. In the end, I simply remembered that though I couldn't do much to help this woman, if we all helped a little--in whatever ways we can--communities like this can be improved.
