Hi Everybody, since Lenovo wasn't able to answer the question of 4K@60Hz working or not on the Y520 I decided to try it. The built-in Kaby Lake CPU's Intel GPU supports 4K@60Hz via DisplayPort - but there's no DP on this laptop. The integrated nVidia GPU supports 4K@60Hz via HDMI 2.0/DP ... but sadly, due to the fact that display is hooked primarily onto the Intel GPU's HDMI interface, it's version 1.4 only, so no HDMI 2.0 port on the laptop. :(
However, the laptop has 1x USB Type-C port and it's able to drive a 4K screen at 60Hz through it, if you're clever enough ;)
My config is a Y520 with i7 and 1050Ti GPU but the same should work on i5/1050 (without "Ti") configs as well..
.. and actually on ALL laptops of ANY brand where following criteria are met:
- GPU supports 4K@60Hz (mostly via DisplayPort)
- Presence of a USB Type-C port on the laptop
- USB Type-C port supports DisplayPort Alternate (ALT) mode
- USB Type-C to HDMI 2.0 adapter (or complete cable)
- when using adapter: a quality HDMI 2.0 cable
- 4K@60Hz capable input on the display (now on an LG UF7787 4K WebOS2 smart tv)
I went for the adapter + cable setup:
- CLUB3D USB Type-C to HDMI 2.0 active adapter (CAC-1504), http://www.club-3d.com/en/detail/2349/usb-3.1-type-c-to-hdmit-2.0-uhd-active-adapter/ - at around $30 or so ... not a big deal ..
- 3m HDMI 2.0 (!) cable, mine is a simple one from China for around $10..
And it works, see for yourself.
I'm going to update Lenovo's corresponding support topic too.
Shall I test some games at 4K@60Hz ? :) (I will.. stay tuned). Just tell me a good recording program, Lenovo's Nerve Sense failed to record the 4K desktop, no matter if it was selected as primary or secondary.
The trick is quite simple and no drivers are needed at all - just plug in the adapter, connect your 4K tv/monitor via a HDMI 2.0 cable to it and enjoy 4K@60Hz ;)
Lag is missing, at least I cannot feel one. It depends of course also on the display you use. A monitor will be very responsive, while a classic tv can have some sort of input lag... it's still best to put the TV into "PC" mode or similar .. and try to disable all possible picture-improving fancy stuff on the tv because they all increase input lag a little bit more.
Thanks for watching, comments, question are welcome. ;)
Aaand.. thank you Club3D guys for the recycled paper boxing and the quality adapter.. works like a charm.
