Lindau is a major Bavarian town and an island on the eastern side of Lake Constance, a freshwater lake called Bodensee in German. It is the capital of the Landkreis or rural district of Lindau, near the borders of Austria (Vorarlberg) and Switzerland (St. Gallen and Thurgau). Lindau is part of Bavarian Swabia. The coat of arms of Lindau town is a lime tree. The historic town of Lindau is located on an 0.68-square-kilometre (0.26 sq mi) island, which is connected with the mainland by a road-traffic bridge and a railway dam leading to Lindau station.

Lindau (Bodensee) (alemannisch: Lindau/Lindou ['lɪːnɗʌʊ] oder Linda/Linde ['lɪːnɗɛ]; früher Lindau im Bodensee) ist eine Große Kreisstadt und Verwaltungssitz des gleichnamigen Landkreises im bayerischen Regierungsbezirk Schwaben.
Die Stadt, ehemals Freie Reichsstadt (bis 1806), liegt am östlichen Ufer des Bodensees im Dreiländereck Deutschland–Österreich–Schweiz; ihr historisches Zentrum ist eine Insel im See.
Im Sommer ist der Tourismus eine wichtige Einnahmequelle der Stadt, die wegen ihrer einzigartigen Lage am Bodensee viele Besucher anzieht. Der Tourismusverband Lindau zählte für das Jahr 2012 ein Rekordhoch von über 800.000 Übernachtungen, damit ist Lindau eines der wichtigsten Touristenziele am Bodensee.
