This rare lunar eclipse lasts a total of 72 minutes! When the sun, the earth and the moon will align.... it began in the early morning hours on this December 21st, 2010. It is known to cast an amber glow on snowy landscapes says NASA.
The moon passed through the darkest part of the earths shadow.
The last time a full lunar eclipse coincided with the winter solstice was in AD 1554!
The best time it was viewed in EST was around 3:17am, when the moon was at its deepest shadow, displaying the most fantasic shades of coppery red.
Although the arrival of the solstice cannot be seen - the moment describes an instant when the earth's axial tilt is farthest away from the sun, resulting in the shortest day of the year and well as the longest night of the year.
