The Logitech Bemo camera is a decent camera in the right environment. The video captured outdoors or in bright light is pretty darn good. The video captured inside in lower light is really bad.
This camera requires an Apple device to work (iPhone 4s and newer). It does not work with Android phones. The box includes a really simple instruction sheet - how to charge, and how to download the app. You are left to figure things out on your own - that frustrates me.
I decided to use this at a family reunion. Everybody that saw this thing thought it was a Flip camera, only smaller. I think everybody is right, it is a reboot of the whole small, easy to use, single purpose video camera that Flip made famous and then died away when cell phones with cameras happened.
Like the Flip, there is no viewfinder or screen to tell what you are recording. Unlike the Flip, the outdoor video is sharp and clear. The camera is super easy to use - hold down the round tab at the bottom of the thing, and you are now recording video. Press that tab quickly and you just took a picture.
The lens is really wide angle, almost 180 degree view.
I took some outdoor video of launching water balloons, I had to get very close to the action or else everything got small quickly. I could more or less aim the camera just by guessing. Because the view is so wide, aiming wasn't critical.
I then turned the camera over to my cousin to record video during the party. The results were mixed. When he was outside, he captured great video. Move inside to a normally lit room and everything went super muddy and dark. My iPhone does a much better job recording video in this level of light.
The camera is controlled by an iPhone app through Bluetooth. You first download the app, turn on the camera, turn on Bluetooth on your phone, and then pair the two in System settings. Now you run the app and you can control the camera. And the camera ships video back to your phone - so the two are synced within the app. That all works just fine.
The biggest gripe I have is the live camera view through the app - there is about a 20 second lag between what you see on the phone and what the camera sees. It is virtually impossible to frame a shot with this system. The only way to make this work is to just generally aim the camera at people and hope for the best.
The camera isn't waterproof - or at least I didn't see that listed. Now if it was waterproof, there would be a lot more fun things you could do with this. That water balloon launching I was filming - I really wanted to tape the record button down and launch the camera. Because we were near the beach, that was a big no go.
In a strange way, this could be a not waterproof way smaller GoPro camera. They would need to solve how to mount the camera on things and how to trigger recording without holding the button down.
Through the app it is easy to combine video, edit it (stop and start points in the recording), upload it to Twitter or Facebook, and save the video to your phone Photos. That seems to be a big selling point of this camera. I can do that today with my standard iPhone - maybe even in an easier fashion.
Video is stored on a MicroSD memory card. So it isn't too hard to remove that card and transfer the recordings to a PC or Mac computer (you will need a MicroSD card reader).
The camera does eat the battery charge pretty quickly and the camera does get warm if you use it a lot. The camera charges with a microUSB cable (provided in the box).
The camera itself is good - the lens quality is excellent, and the daylight recording is very clear and sharp. The audio recording is also very good. Logitech could improve the app to give better indoor performance, improve the horrible live lag issue, and improve the ability to record video (right now you have to hold down the button to shoot video - it would be nice to press the button once to start recording and then again to stop). It would also be nice to have a light to indicate the device is recording - actually doing something.
This seems like a decent start on something that needs more software development. The hardware is good; the software is not so great.
