The more we work with the Lumix GH5, the more we realize that it offers us opportunities to think differently about the way we capture photographs and videos.
Technology is supposed to make our lives easier, and the Lumix GH5 is delivering in ways we just didn't see coming. On our latest trip out to Los Angeles we filmed our weekly vlog, photographed a celebrity wedding, and created fashion films all on the GH5. In every case scenario it was the only camera we needed, and we didn't wish for anything more.
One of the key benefits the GH5 offers is Dual Image Stabilization. That feature, currently exclusive to Lumix, has opened up a lot of new doors when it comes to how we capture both still photographs, and video footage. We are finding ourselves attempting new things because of it, and have great success as well.
With a full frame DSLR, or even a Lumix GH4 for that matter, I would never attempt to hand hold a 300 or 600mm lens and shoot video for instance. On a full frame camera both of those lenses would at least require a monopod, if not a tripod. On the Lumix GH5 however you can shoot this way hand held with ease, and with some pretty spectacular results.
I love working with long lenses though. First and foremost it's less obtrusive, and secondarily it offers a unique look that is different from a standard zoom. Long lenses force the viewer to focus on the details of a subject, while at the same time creating compressed backgrounds that are larger than life with beautiful DOF.
Prior to the Lumix GH5 working with long lenses meant carrying too much gear to make it worth my while in a lot of cases. I am not a fan of carrying bags of gear because it often distracts me from the job at hand. Now that I can leave the tripod or monopod behind, I will undoubtedly be shooting this way much more often from here forward.
