Tutorial on how we did the hat stand, Valentine's doll house and a picture for the nursery scene in Disney and Cameron Macintosh's Mary Poppins.
Hat Stand:
5' of 2" PVC Pipe
4 2" PVC Couplers
1 PVC Cap
PVC Cement
40" Bungee
2 Eye Bolts
1 Finial for top (We found our near decking materials)
2 sets of Shelf Brackets for the bottom
2 Coat Hooks
2 small hinges
Spray Paint
One of the shelf brackets should be stationary while the other two are attached using small hinges. Mary will rotate the hinged "legs" when putting the hat stand in place. Once the scene ends our technical crew screwed the brackets in to the floor backstage to prevent it from falling over during the show. They also took that time to straighten out the pipe if it wasn't quite right.
We recommend spray painting the individual pieces first to prevent the paint from acting as glue when you put the whole thing together. Make sure you purchase a spray paint that can be used on plastic.
Picture Frame
We used a chalkboard that was already in a frame that had a solid back. Cut using a table saw and attach back together using a piano hinge and hot glue.
Valentine's Doll House
Framed out of 2x4 and topped with 1/4" plywood. Hinge on one side of set using 2-3 standard door hinges, and attach felt or furniture sliders to the bottom. Cut out at least one window for Valentine's hand and paint entire unit to resemble a Victorian doll house.
