http://www.GoodFellaMedia.com || Radio personality Justin D Live sat down with Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins to talk about the following:
How "The Water[s]" mixtape concept was developed.
"Initially, a friend of mine came up with this concept The Healing Component. It was for a mixtape that he was going to do and he never did it, and I was going to take the idea. He got really upset, so I didn't use it. And I started thinking from that point: "What is the Healing Component?" -- God & Water were the only two things that I thought were worthy to be called that.
Intentionally studying artists like Migos & Makonnen for their ability to create music with replay value.
" Makonnen, Migos or anybody else that you want to name. No disrespect, those artist getting hot for the short periods of time that they do, so often they tend to. There's something to be said about why their songs are so catchy. Why people gravitate to it. -- Those are things that I put in (my) music by paying attention to other shit. That's stuff that sticks with people and that stuff is intentional.
Feeling like Macklemore adopted "Village Value" song concept for his Thrift Shop record, or "at least, saw the video," says Mick Jinkens
"I felt like, he definitely saw the (Value Village - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_I8vpLB9Fw-) video. I peeped all of that. That's what kinda' made me fell like, 'damn, he probably saw the video one time,' but what are you going to do?"
Being frustrated with lack of attention he received prior to releasing The Water[s] mixtape.
"When I was doing those first 5 tapes, it was unpolished. I wasn't really seeing any influx of attention or exposure growth. -- I wasn't pushing it the right way. So, I was confused as to why I wasn't getting the feedback I wanted."
