After my first Grass field experience at the Chilhowee Glider Port a couple of weeks ago, I decided to try a slightly more challenging grass stip this weekend. The Blue Mountain Air Park (Gibson Field, (private field) GE05 held a "Fall Fly In". Herman King and his wife flew N739YR, and I took N2671L with Larry Henderson on board just to make sure I stayed out of trouble :) The field is difficult to spot from the air as it is masked heavily by trees. Once located, I flew a rather poor pattern, but did have a stabilized approach from Base, all the way to final. The video will show that I didn't have a ton of clearance between me and the trees that are on the runway centerline. After watching some of the other guys land, I realized that a "serpentine" approach on final was probably a better way to go as it takes the trees out of the equation. Gaining experience by safely pushing the envelope in very small steps! Some of the still shots I took turned out goofy for some reason, as if low resolution. Not sure why. Gibson Field is 2400 feet long by 50 feet wide. This was a cool day, and I was about 200 pounds under gross weight. The takeoff run had me up and out with pretty good margin for safety, but I don't think I'd try this field with a 145hp Cessna 172 on a high density altitude day!!
