Today was no good flight weather. An overcast sky, high winds with a lot of sudden gusts and turbulence, made this difficult circumstances for this field test.
OpenPilot (http://openpilot.org) is a fully open source auto pilot in development. It has successfully controlled quad copters in fully autonomous mode before, but for fixed wing aircraft this is the first attempt to fly on its own.
Considering the circumstances, the test was a success. The allowed margin for the to be kept altitude was a bit too high, allowing the aircraft to sink too low for safe flight, but that could have been fixed with a little bit of parameter tuning. Unfortunately the repeated (and bad) high wind landings lead to airframe damage, forcing me to abort the tests before I was hundred percent satisfied. I will do so when the weather is better.
