DISCLAIMER: * While bleaching your own hair is easy, you need to do your homework: you'd better know what you're doing before you begin!
Please follow instructions carefully and read thoroughly at least twice. If you skim through them, you may miss some instructions, which are crucial to your hair turning out healthy, and the way you imagined.
If you already have color treated hair like mine is, you may need to strip the color first. I personally didn’t this time because I was dying it the same color and just wanted it to look brighter which is why the bleach turned out uneven.*
Step-by-step instructions:
Step 1: Mix your bleach
Make sure that your hair is thoroughly dry. Then mix your bleach with your developer. Depending on how light you are trying to take your hair dictates the volume of developer you use. I personally use a volume 20 cream developer because I want to put my hair through as little trauma as possible and my hair turns blonde very easily. The ratio of bleach to developer is usually 1:1, but if you are using bleach other than the QuickBlue I recommended, it’s a good idea to check the instructions.
Step 2: Protect Skin
Oil, Gloves, Shirts Make sure that you are wearing clothes that you don’t care about, gloves, and put oil around your hairline. The oil is not a required step, but it is a helpful one if you have sensitive skin like I do. It just puts a nice barrier between your skin and the chemical mixture.
Step 3: Section Hair
Clip your hair into section. Then proceed to take down each section one by one starting in This step is extremely important to ensure getting a quick and easy application.
Step 4: Apply Mixture
Release one section at a time. Start by taking down the section of your hair that you want to be lightest first (*this is not the technique that you use when the end goal is to keep your hair blonde or if you’re going platinum). Your roots will lighten the fastest, and the ends of your hair damage the easiest—especially if they’re been lightened before—so apply bleach to them last. You will start by bleaching at least a ½ inch from your scalp because the heat from your head will cause the bleach mixture to swell towards your scalp. Once you have gotten the middle portions of your hair coated, go back in and do your roots and ends. Double check that you haven’t missed any spots!
How long you leave the bleach on your hair is going to vary by the color that you are trying to achieve and the color of your hair. The darker your hair the longer it will take. I personally don’t leave bleach sit on my hair for longer than 30 minutes that is very short. But don’t leave it on for more than 60 minutes because your hair will fry. You can test a small section by taking a damp towel and wipe off bleach in one section. You might have a slight burning sensation, which is normal, especially if your hair is clean. Don’t be alarmed; it’s not great feeling but its normal.
Step 5: Rinse out Bleach
Rinse your hair until the water runs clear.
Step 6: Dry Hair
Either allow your hair to dry or diffuse it before going on to dying.
