Last month, I was invited to a very special event in San Francisco hosted by EA and Microsoft for the upcoming beta for Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 -- which will take place on January 14th to the 18th on PS4 and Xbox One (No PC beta, unfortunately). I was a big admirer of the first game, and after several hours of playing with the developers and other journalists, I can easily say that this entry takes things even further than you'd expect. With about thirty playable characters on both Plant and Zombie factions, in addition to a brand new quest system and PvE content, the public beta aims to give players a taste of what they can experience in PVZ:GW2.
In the new game mode Herbal Assault, an inverse of the popular Gardens and Graveyards game mode from the original, the Plants are now on the offensive and have to retake territories controlled by the Zombies. This new map on Moon Base Z shows just how crazy things can get with the lunar landscape. When out of atmosphere, gravity is low and you'll be able to maneuver more vertically. As you capture points, the objectives change slightly, culminating in a really bizarre, humorous final round where the two factions seek to roll the most bombs into generators. And of course, each map is different, and you can expect unique objectives wherever you play.
In the footage you're watching now, I'm controlling the Mob Cob variant of the Kernel Corn class. Each class has several variants with different skills and abilities, and this incarnation's shots can puncture through multiple targets. Which is very valuable in large-scale battles and in close-quarters.
I'm a really big fan of the Rush style gametype, and I completely loved PVZ's take on it. Of course, both sides have their own gametypes, so you'll be able to battle it out on which ever side you choose.
