Taken 22 years ago in the summer of 1990 at the Sepulveda Basin Model Airport in Van Nuys, CA sponsored by the Valley Flyers and sanctioned by the NMPRA. This segment shows the awesome craftsmanship of the premier class of radio control racing. These planes do 10 laps in about a minute up to 200mph with a .040 sized engine using 50% nitro fuel. The motors are typically rebuilt after a race. The adrenaline rush flying a plane whose prop unloads at 27,000RPM is unbelievable. And.... in the blink of the eye your $2000+ investment, let alone time invested in building these planes of perfection it is gone. Poof. Hence the reason for taking the video in the morning judging time before the inevitable carnage. Though I personally never raced this class due to my finances- I attend numerous races including the infamous final race at San Luis Obispo where the plane came into the crowd and seriously injured a guy about 10 feet from me.
