While scuba diving in Hawaii we came across this little Hawaiian green sea turtle. He was completely entangled in a mess of fishing line causing him a lot of effort just to move around. Only able to get around slowly, he was clearly an easy target. After removing all the fishing line, the little turtle swam up to the surface, got a big gulp of air and came back down for a rest.
Glad to see a happy outcome for this little green sea turtle. However, fishing is a popular pastime here in Hawaii, so the chances of this same incident repeating itself will be present. We do recommend carrying a knife or scissors at all time when scuba diving in Hawaii...or anywhere for that matter. Unfortunately he won't be the last and may find himself in the same predicament.
Fish responsibly, pay attention to your lines and if you see turtles take the time to reel it in, maybe even moving to a different location.
